our story

ANYONE REMEMBER
M Y S P A C E ?

Joey + Rubiie both grew up in the same city and had the same circle of friends but did not meet until summer of 2005. In 2005, both attended summer school at Arroyo High School, but still did not cross paths until they were introduced by a mutual friend on Myspace.

Though they didn't start dating when they met, they became fast friends as they had a lot in common. Always messaging on AIM (AOL Instant Messenger for all you non-millennials) and spamming each other's Myspace profiles with comments.

IT'S B E E N
A WHILE

As the years go by in high school, they eventually lost touch. Until one day in January 2009, when Joey sent Rubiie a message on AIM asking her for her number.

It picked up right where it left off and Joey + Rubiie began texting nonstop.

THE F I R S T
DATE

After a couple weeks of reconnecting through endless texting and late night phone calls, Joey finally asked Rubiie out on a date. The plan was for Joey to pick Rubiie up after class so they can head to the movie theaters to watch Taken at Bella Terra.

All was well.. Excitement was in the air.. Until Joey ended up lost and was 3 hours late. Luckily, Rubiie didn't let this discourage her and waited and waited and waited for Joey to get there.

After the movies, Joey took Rubiie home and the first thing she did was call her best friend, Cory, to tell him about the first date as she was absolutely smitten with Joey.

THE FIRST
P R O P O S A L

In October 2019, while they were on a trip to Vegas with some family and friends, Joey and his cousin, JR, planned a scavenger hunt. But it was no ordinary scavenger hunt. IT WAS A RUSE FOR A PROPOSAL! Rubiie was hell bent on getting all the points to win the scavenger hunt. Little did she know, she was about to win in more ways than one.

In the middle of the Bellagio Conservatory, Rubiie found a note where Joey expressed his feelings. When she looked up from the note, Joey was on one knee and asked, "Will you marry me?"

THE S E C O N D
PROPOSAL

Shortly after the proposal in 2019, the whole world shut down due to the coronavirus. Joey + Rubiie had to put their wedding plans on hold.

On January 26, 2022, on their 13th anniversary, Joey proposed to Rubiie again at her childhood home in front of her late grandmother's altar with all of their close friends and family on Zoom.

places to eat

JOE’S PIZZA LA

Hear me out, P I Z Z A !! Aaaaand from New York!? Need I say more?

BOTTEGA LOUIE

This is one of Rubiie's favorite places for pasta and macarons. A must try is the Trenne pasta + Portobello Fries! Rubiie had these staples once and can't stop thinking about it since. Don't forget to grab a box of macarons before you leave!

HOP WOO

A beloved place for Joey, Rubiie, close friends, + family! Family style Chinese food in Chinatown.

FOR THE WIN

Who doesn't love a good burger? This place is one of the most talked about burger joints (and with good reason!), specializing in yummy smash burgers - Joey's favorite type of burgers!

guys, what about tacos?

Truth be told, it was a bit challenging putting the list above together because Joey + Rubiie normally only eats tacos when they're in LA. So they really had to think about their other favorite places in DTLA.

There will be tacos at the wedding - BUT if you insist on trying Joey + Rubiie's favorite taco places ..

TACOS 1986

Joey + Rubiie loves the tacos and mulitas from here! It was a hit after they went out for a night of drinking in DTLA with Best Man and Maid of Honor, JR + Kristal.

ANGEL'S TIJUANA TACOS

Rubiie's Maid of Honor, Jas, + her husband introduced Angel's Tijuana Tacos to Joey + Rubiie and they were in heaven! A must try is the Angel's Loaded Potato - you won't regret it!!

AVENUE 26 TACOS

Joey + Rubiie's wedding planner extraordinaire, Becky, introduced them to Avenue 26 Tacos after a viewing of the venue and to say it was delicious was an understatement. It was SO. FREAKING. GOOD. Pro tip: ask for a potato before checking out. It totally enhances the experience.

KING TACO

Growing up in El Monte, King Taco was a right of passage and Joey + Rubiie ate a lot of it. Luckily this taco chain has a location nearby in DTLA. It's not the best taco joint but (coupled with extreme nostalgia for Joey + Rubiie) will get the job done when in a pinch!

HONORABLE MENTION:
CIELITO LINDO

Yes, this is not a taco joint BUT in 2011, Joey took Rubiie out for her 21st birthday and they explored Olvera Street while tasting alllllll of the taquito shops on Olvera Street. Cielito Lindo was the clear winner.

places to see

LA BREA TAR PITS

The world's most famous ice age fossil excavation site.

LACMA

100,000 objects dating from ancient times to the present.

OLVERA STREET

A lively Mexican marketplace with historic charm, vibrant colors, street vendors, authentic cuisine, and cultural immersion. (Rubiie's favorite place to explore!)

Your family may bring a plus one.

If you must add some accent colors, please only add minimal accents of deep burgundy, dark emerald, or gold. The darker the accent colors, the better.

ASIDE FROM THE COLOR BLACK,
HOW SHOULD I D R E S S ?

We would love to see our friends and family get dressed up with us! Although our wedding will be a fun and wild night, we will have a strict dress code.

Gentlemen: Please wear a black suit and tie or a nice black dress shirt and black slacks. This would be a great opportunity for you to accent with a gold watch or a deep burgundy tie.

Ladies: Please wear formal black dresses and comfortable heels or flats.

We ask that you do not wear flip flops or slides as we would hate for your toes to be stepped on while on the dance floor.

You will definitely be missed!

If you cannot attend our wedding, please let us know by putting a 0 on your RSVP card.
